paper

paper

on the boat
we use very little paper
one of those skinny 3x8-inch spiral notebooks
lasts us a season —
grocery lists
chores to do
a phone number we need handy
keeping score at dice or backgammon —
and we use both sides of the paper
for a writer
accustomed to having a printer handy
that’s remarkable
just one little pad —
and a packet of small sticky notes
for recording credit card purchases
made on line!
everything else
(except my journal, of course)
is on the computer —
books to read on the iPad
magazines and the daily news feeds
bills downloaded from websites to file electronically
bank statements, health insurance claims, tax forms
occasionally we ask the marina
to print us out a document
we need in hard copy,
but it’s rare
last season I brought a box of paper clips on board
but I doubt I’ve used 6 in two years!

I suppose we live in an increasingly
paperless society
but for one whose life is writing
it’s an oddity to use
almost no paper at all!!
