cabin fever

the clouds stayed put all day
the rain came and went and came again
the very air was gray and heavy –
a storm system from the north
displacing the prevailing winds.
it cast an eerie half-light over the harbor
while unpredictable gusts
tugged at the boats from every direction
jerking them round on their moorings,
or retreated altogether
leaving us spinning aimlessly
on water momentarily like glass.
onboard everything was off balance.

we stayed on the boat
cooped up indoors
looking for things to do.
we made as many quick trips to shore
as we could find excuse for.
even the internet was uncooperative
given the dense and cloudy sky.
we were cut off,
bored, restless, at loose ends,
nothing to do
but wait
for the weather to change.
